India Provides Humanitarian Aid on the Occasion of Id-Ul-Fitr in Jaffna

1. On March 25, as part of its ongoing commitment to humanitarian assistance in the Northern Province, Consulate General of India in Jaffna, on behalf of the High Commission of India in Colombo and the people of India, has distributed humanitarian aid to 220 beneficiaries in Jaffna on the occasion of Id-Ul-Fitr (Ramadan).

2. This initiative, undertaken during the holy month of Ramadan, aimed to support women-led households, widows, the elderly, children, differently-abled, and economically disadvantaged families.

The humanitarian aid distribution took place at the Jaffna Thiruvalluvar Cultural Centre, where Consul General Mr. Sai Murali handed over the aid packages alongside the Governor of the Northern Province, Nagalingam Vedanayahan, and religious leader Maulvi B.A.S. Sufiyan. The event reinforced India’s strong people-to-people ties with Sri Lanka and its commitment to supporting vulnerable communities in the Northern Province.

4. Each humanitarian aid package, valued at approximately LKR 8,000, included essential food items such as rice, wheat flour, pulses, coconut oil, sugar, and other basic necessities, offering much-needed relief to families facing economic hardships.

5. Speaking at the event, Consul General Sai Murali extended his Id-Ul-Fitr greetings, emphasizing that Ramadan is a time of reflection, compassion, and solidarity. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to assisting Sri Lanka and strengthening the historical and cultural ties between the two nations.

6. Governor of the Northern Province, Nagalingam Vedanayahan, expressed gratitude to India for its unwavering support, particularly in humanitarian aid and community development. He highlighted India’s consistent commitment to uplifting the people of the Northern Province, especially during times of need, and looked forward to further strengthening cooperation.

7. Maulvi B.A.S. Sufiyan expressed gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his support to the Muslim community in the North and for providing humanitarian aid during Ramadan. He appreciated India’s continued assistance in community development projects since 2009, which have benefited communities in the Northern Province. He welcomed initiatives such as air and ferry connectivity and expressed optimism about future collaborations that would further strengthen regional ties and economic opportunities.

8. India has consistently extended humanitarian support to the Northern Province, through food aid, essential medicines, and livelihood assistance aimed at uplifting communities. Over the years, India has played a key role in supporting the people of the Northern Province through various initiatives in housing, healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.
