Ferry Service between Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai resumes
- 1. The passenger ferry service between Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, and Kankesanthurai (KKS), Jaffna, resumed operations on 16.08.24, following a brief suspension after its initial launch in October 2023.
- 2. Consul General Shri.Sai Murali visited KKS port to personally welcome passengers aboard the ferry ‘Sivagangai,’ operated by a private operator IndSri Ferry Services. The journey, which lasted approximately four hours, carried around 41 passengers.
- 3. The resumption of this ferry service is expected to further enhance maritime connectivity between India and Sri Lanka, complementing the existing air connectivity between India and Jaffna. During the visit, the Consul General inspected the onboard facilities, including seating and the canteen, and interacted with the operator to better understand the services provided to passengers.
- 4. The ferry departed for Nagapattinam from KKS on 17 August 2024 with 25 passengers. The resumption of the ferry will strengthen bilateral relations between India and SL through improved connectivity, as highlighted in the vision document for economic partnership jointly adopted during the visit of the President of Sri Lanka to India in July 2023.
