The Government of India has been undertaking several projects for the development of educational facilities in the Northern Province. As part of this, Government of India, in the recent past, had provided a grant of LKR 187.7 Million for renovation of 79 schools, LKR 146 Million for procurement of 110 buses for use all over Sri Lanka and LKR 600 Million for establishing Faculties of Agriculture and Engineering of University of Jaffna in Kilinochchi and about LKR 10 Million for setting up an English Language lab at Jaffna National College of Education.
2. Apart from this, the Government of India is also extending scholarships to the students of the Northern Province to pursue higher education in India as well as to the employees of Sri Lankan government for capacity building training under the ITEC programme.
3. In continuation of these efforts, currently, the Government of India has provided assistance for constructing class room buildings in 27 schools in the Northern Province at a total cost of LKR 250 Million and those class room buildings which have been completed are being handed over to the schools in phases. As part of this, today (02 July 2018) Consul General of India Mr.S.Balachandran jointly with Dr.K.Sarveswaran, Hon’ble Education Minister of Northern Province inaugurated the class room buildings in J/Mandaithivu Roman Catholic Tamil Mix School and J/ Melinchimunai Roman Catholic Tamil Mix Vidiyalayam, built at a cost of about 8 million each. Education authorities, School Principals and staff members, students, parents and well-wishers attended the ceremony, which was marked by cultural programmes. The Hon’ble Education Minister and other speakers thanked India for its assistance.
