Tagore’s Day in Jaffna
In commemoration of three times visit of Nobel Laureate Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore to Jaffna in October 1922, June 1928 and in May 1934 as well as to celebrate his 155th Birth Anniversary, a Memorial Lecture will be held in association with Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna at 9.30 A.M. on July 9, 2016 at Hoover Auditorium, University of Jaffna.
The Oration will be delivered by Prof. Swapan Kumar Datta, the Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, West Bengal, India. Visva-Bharati was founded by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in 1921, which was declared to be the Central University and an Institution of National Importance by an Act of Parliament in 1951. The President of India is the Visitor of the University; the Prime Minister of India acts as the Chancellor of the University; and the Governor of West Bengal is the Rector of the University. The Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati is appointed by the President of India.
Prof. Swapan Kumar Datta is a well-known Indian Scientist in Plant Biotechnology. He has been named as among the top 25 Indian Scientists from all fields in science. Dr. Datta is a Fellow of Indian National Science Academy and the Fellow of the World Academy of Science.
Earlier, he served as the Deputy Director General (Crop Science) at the Indian Council for Agricultural Research, Government of India.
