Book Launch “Mirrored Images” by Rajiva Wijesinha at the

Consulate General of India, Jaffna

The Consulate General of India, Jaffna is organizing the launch of an anthology of Sri Lankan poetry titled Mirrored Images, edited by Prof. Rajiva Wijesinha, Member of Parliament and published by the National Book Trust of India.  The event will be held in Jaffna at 3.30 pm on Monday, 30 September 2013 at the Consulate General of India, Jaffna, No.14 Maruthady Lane, Nallur.

 

The collection of poetry showcases the common themes explored by writers in different languages within Sri Lanka, and covers landscapes and love, politics and philosophy. It includes introductions to poetry in the different languages by distinguished academics, Chelva Kanaganayakam for Tamil and Amarakeerthi Liyanage for Sinhala. The book includes work by nearly 100 Sri Lankan poets, and translations are by experts such as Lakshmi de Silva, Ranjini Obeysekera, Lakshmi Holmstron and A J Canagaratna.

The launch will be followed by a recital of poems by the poets Mr. Akilan, Mr. A. Jesurasa, Mr. Karunakaran, Mr.  Pathmanathan, Mr. Siththanthan, Mr. Vivek (Tamil),  Mr. Ariyawansa Ranaweera (Sinhala) and Mr. Aiyathurai Santhan.

The National Book Trust of India has earlier published ‘Bridging Connections: an Anthology of Sri Lankan Short Stories’ in the three languages, also edited by Wijesinha. The anthology has been translated into a number of other Indian languages, including Tamil and Marathi. Rajiva Wijesinha, editor of the volume, had taught initially at the University of Peradeniya, before working at other Universities and then heading the Sri Lankan Peace Secretariat. As a Member of Parliament, he is currently Adviser to the President on Reconciliation.
